The Marketing Memo #30: How to Get Free PR for Your Company

Plus How to Leverage Birthday Marketing

Hey there marketers,

Welcome to the 30th issue of The Marketing Memo. We’re back with more can’t-miss resources for you.

We took a longer break than anticipated, so we wanted to share what’s been going on behind the scenes.

Firstly, our editor Zulie joined the Medium team, so she’s transitioned away from her role as a Better Marketing editor. She’s still a dear friend of the pub, and we’re excited to see her flourish in this new role!

Our editors Sinem and Kati had busy summers full of travel, which also meant getting to meet IRL for the first time in Vienna!

Now we’re both hard at work, with Kati taking on more client work since her daughter started preschool this fall, and Sinem gearing up to host a free live Masterclass to help you grow your audience and income by writing on Medium. (Click here to sign up - it’s happening on Thursday!)

We’re both excited to get back to the Marketing Memo, starting today. Here’s what we’ve got for you:

  1. A guide to getting free PR for your company

  2. A list of all the tools we’ve recommended so far

  3. A quick tip to leverage birthdays

Let’s jump in.

Guide: 7 Websites to Get Free (or Insanely Cheap) PR for Your Company

If you’re looking to get PR for your company, there are several ways to go about it. While cold pitching journalists is a start, it can be time consuming with a long lead time.

Rather than hoping that a journalist will use your pitch, using free PR platforms is the best way to connect to journalists who are actively working on stories in your area of expertise.

Check out this resource from journalist Ashley Couto for a list of websites to get free PR.

Our favorite tools, all in one place

To date we’ve recommended 27 of our favorite marketing tools in these newsletters. We’ve rounded them all up here: The Marketing Memo: Tool Recommendations

We want to make sure we’re only recommending tools that we use and love, so moving forward we aren’t going to keep ourselves beholden to recommending a new tool every week. We’ll still share any great tools that we come across! We’re just not going to share a tool just for sharing a tool’s sake.

Today’s Tip: How to Leverage Birthday Marketing to Boost Awareness and Foster Loyalty

When you’re competing for space in an overly crowded inbox, you want to use every tool at your disposal. That means never missing an opportunity to reengage with a subscriber, and building loyalty with them, too.

TL;DR: If you’re collecting birthdays, don’t miss your chance for a boost with birthday marketing.

Why subscribe? A memo (AKA a memorandum) is defined as “a way to inform a group of people about a specific problem, solution, or event.” When we thought about what we wanted to deliver with this newsletter, that definition hit the nail on the head.

If you want to keep up with problems, solutions, and news in marketing, The Marketing Memo is your ideal Monday read.
